BEAGHMORE STONES, COUNTY TYRONE, NORTHERN IRELAND
Secluded in the wilderness of Northern Ireland, this network of stone circles was unearthed by peat-diggers during World War II. Built in a similar pattern to Stonehenge and other Neolithic structures, little is understood about the purpose of these stones.

SAINT PATRICK AT TARA, COUNTY MEATH, IRELAND
Teamhair na Rí, or the Hill of Tara, was the seat of the ancient Irish kings and, according to legend, of the divine race of kings who ruled before them. The Cathedral of Saint Patrick was constructed on the network of hills, and features this statue of the saint holding a shepherd's crook and shamrock, hidden here by the setting sun.

Though this Dominican abbey on Lough Arrow was abandoned many centuries ago, its thousand-year-old cemetery is still in use by residents of the area.

CUCHULAINN'S STONE, COUNTY LOUTH, IRELAND
Difficult to find in the rolling hills north of Knockbridge, Ireland, this twelve-foot solitary megalith is reputed to be the site where Cuchulainn, the Achilles of Irish legend, died in battle with a band of witches. Mortally wounded, Cuchulainn lashed himself to this stone so that he could continue to fight even as he died.

BOADHBH ISLAND FIGURES, COUNTY FERMANAGH, NORTHERN IRELAND
Boadhbh, or Boa, Island on Lough Erne is home to Caldragh cemetery, with graves dating back to A.D. 500. The cemetery is better known for these enigmatic stone figures, dating from the ancient Celtic period. Visitors have left piles of pennies at its feet.

THE GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, COUNTRY ANTRIM, NORTHERN IRELAND
The result of volcanic activity, this basalt formation on the northern coast of Ireland does not look like the creation of nature. The honeycomb-shaped stones are said to be the remnants of a bridge constructed by Irish hero Fionn MacCumhal to reach Scotland. A similar structure can be found on the island of Staffa on the western coast of Scotland.

The "Old Bridge" of Florence, spanning the River Arno in the heart of the city. Jewelry shops and goldsmiths line the bridge, while the upper level was constructed as a secret passage for Cosimo II di Medici to pass from his home in the Palazzo Piti to his offices, or Uffizi, the colonnaded building at the right. The Uffizi now house many of the greatest works of Florentine artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo and Botticelli.

Taken from the small church on a mountain above the city, the Chiesa di San Miniato al Monte, this stylized view of Florence clearly features the River Arno, the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) with its single tower, and the Duomo of Brunelleschi atop the Santa Maria del Fiore.
